We provide low vision assessments and services to the partially sighted. Many people with low vision have some remaining vision that can be enhanced to improve the quality of life. The most common causes of low vision are: macular degeneration, glaucoma, genetic disorders, diabetic retinopathy and optic atrophy.
To help our patients with low vision we will often use:
- High powered reading or bifocal glasses to improve reading ability. It must be remembered that when power is increased, reading material must be held closer
- Hand held or mounted telescopes to improve distance vision. It must be remembered that when we increase the magnification of a telescope, the visual field will be reduced. That is, you may be able to see someone’s face, but not his/her shoulders (unless you point the telescope in that direction)
- Tinted prescription eyeglasses to reduce glare
- Hand held magnifiers
